Getting started

Who is Nana?

Nana is KinSpeak's support assistant. Tap the chat bubble in the bottom-right corner of any page for help.

Nana is for support only. She does not role-play or speak as a trained voice.

What are KinSpeak Storytellers?

16 platform trained voices (8 female, 8 male) that every account can use right away. They have a gold border and a small “ST” after the name.

They do not count against your voice limit. You can favorite them, but not edit or delete them.

Where do I find my voices and the Storytellers?

Open Voices. Tap My Voices for the voices you trained, or Storytellers for the platform voices. Tap a voice's picture or Play to hear a sample.

Do I need to be 18? Can kids use KinSpeak?

Yes, you must be 18 or older (or the age of majority where you live) to have an account. Children are listeners, not account holders.

Minors, celebrities and public figures are not allowed as voice sources.

What is KinKids?

Free printables starring the KinScript friends, for Sprouts (ages 2 to 5) and Scouts (ages 6 to 10). Open KinKids from the menu or the home page tile.

Right now there are four PDFs: two coloring books, a Word Find and a Seek & Find.

How do I open a KinKids PDF in the Home Screen app on iPhone or iPad?

The PDF opens in a sheet. Tap Save or share to keep or print it, Open in Safari to view it there, or Close to go back.

What are the hearts, and how do favorites work?

Tap the heart on a voice, script or story to favorite it. Favorites sort to the top and sync across your devices. Tap again to remove it.

What is Your Voices & Stories?

The page that shows your packs and how many voice and story slots you have left. Open it with the grid icon in the top-right corner.

Voices and recording

How do I create a voice?
  1. Open Voices and tap Create voice.
  2. Record four short scripts in your own voice, or upload a recording you have the right to use.
  3. If you upload, confirm whose voice it is.

Clear, quiet recordings make the best trained voice.

How many voices can I create?

Free accounts get 3 voice profiles. Packs add more: Starter +5, Family +8, Legacy +15, Gift Set +8, and they stack.

Storytellers do not count against your limit.

How does voice training work?

Record four short scripts (about 10 to 30 seconds of clear speech each), or upload a recording you have the rights to use. When training finishes, you get a short voice sample to preview.

Why does my voice sound robotic? How do I record a good sample?
  • Record in a quiet room, away from fans, TVs and echo.
  • Speak naturally, like you are talking to family.
  • Aim for 10 to 30 seconds of clear speech per take.

If it still sounds off, retrain with cleaner audio.

What is the voice sample? What does Retry sample do?

A short preview made after training. If it fails, open the voice menu on Voices and tap Retry sample. No retraining needed, and it does not use a story credit.

How do I delete a trained voice?

On Voices, open the voice menu, tap Delete voice, then Delete permanently.

  • Stories in that voice are deleted too, unless you uncheck that box.
  • The saved clip and trained voice data are removed and the slot is freed.
  • On a free account, you can create a new voice 48 hours later.

This cannot be undone.

Can I talk or chat with a trained voice?

No. Trained voices read stories and playlists only. For help, tap Nana in the bottom-right corner.

How can I tell which voice a story uses?

Storyteller voices have a gold border and “ST” after the name. Your own voices have a teal border. Playlist rows show the voice and length, like “Voice: Marcus ST [1:41].”

How do I resize or move my voice photo?

When you add a photo in Create a Voice, a cropper opens.

  • Drag the slider, or tap - and +, to zoom in or out. It starts with the photo filling the frame.
  • On a computer, your mouse wheel zooms too.
  • Drag the photo to position it in the frame.
  • You can zoom out a little past the edges. Any space outside the photo stays clear.
I changed a voice photo. Why hasn't it updated on my other device?

It updates on its own, with no reload needed. Give it a moment. If it still looks old, close the app and open it again.

Invite a Voice

What is Invite a Voice?

A way to ask a loved one to record their own voice from their phone.

  1. In Voices, start Create a Voice.
  2. On Step 2, choose Invite a Voice.
  3. Enter their name and email, and tap Send invite.

We email them a private link, or tap Copy link to text it yourself.

Does the person I invite need a KinSpeak account?

No. They open the link, confirm it is their own voice and that they are 18 or older, and record four short scripts. Progress saves as they go.

Can the person I invite upload a recording instead?

No, invites are record only. If you already have a recording, use Upload Audio File on Step 2 of Create a Voice.

Does an invite use one of my voice slots?

Yes, a slot is held when you send it. If you cancel, the link expires or training cannot finish, the slot is freed at no cost.

Can I cancel an invite?

Yes, anytime until the trained voice is ready. Tap Cancel invite in Voices. The link stops working, their recordings are deleted, and the slot is freed.

Where do I see how my invite is going?

In Voices, under Invites. Each invite shows their name with "(invited)" and a status: "Invite sent", "Link opened", "Waiting for recording" (then "Recording 2 of 4"), "Training", "Invite expired", "Training could not finish" or "Invite cancelled".

When the voice is ready, it moves to My Voices and we notify you.

Can the person I invited hear or use their trained voice?

Not right now. They get a thank-you email. The trained voice lives in your account only.

Can I invite a voice for someone who has passed away?

Invites are for living people. For a loved one who has passed, use Upload Audio File in Create a Voice and choose "Someone who has passed away, and I have legal authority."

How can someone I invited remove their voice or withdraw consent?

They can ask you to delete the voice from your Voices page, or email [email protected]. If the invite is still open, cancelling it deletes their recordings.

Stories and scripts

How do I create a story?
  1. Open Create Story.
  2. Tap Voice and choose a voice.
  3. Tap Script, then open a script's menu and choose Create Story.

You can also start from a script's or voice's menu.

How long does story generation take?

Usually 1 to 5 minutes. You can keep using the app, and we notify you when it is ready.

What if a story fails to generate? Do I lose a credit?

No. A failed story does not use a credit, and Try Again does not charge twice. A story stuck for about 20 minutes is marked failed.

I deleted a story. Do I get the credit back?

No. A finished story keeps its slot after you delete it. A failed story never used a credit.

Will KinSpeak remember my choices if I leave Create Story?

Yes, your voice, script and title are kept on that device for up to 24 hours, and clear once you create the story.

How do I find a script?

Open Scripts. My Scripts has your own; Public has our library. On Public, tap Filter to pick a category or My Favorites.

What is the difference between Public Scripts and KinScript?

Public Scripts are ready-made Learn and nonfiction stories, like Bible, American History and Nature & Animals.

KinScript helps you write a fiction story for kids that you can edit before saving. Family memories and recipes belong in Paste or Upload.

Can I upload or paste my own script?

Yes. In Scripts, tap Create Script, then Paste text or Upload a file (.txt, RTF, .docx or PDF). A script can be up to 4,000 characters.

Longer story? Make it a Chapter Book.

How do I follow along with captions?

When a story plays, the text shows with each word highlighted as it is spoken. Tap the captions icon to hide or show it.

What is the difference between Archive and Delete?

Archive hides an item from your lists; restore it anytime from Settings, then Archive. Delete is permanent.

Can I download my stories?

Yes. In My Stories, you can download each story to keep a copy. Playlists download one story at a time.

What style are story covers and Chapter Book pictures?

New KinScript story covers and new Chapter Book pictures are made in a 3D animated style, with the same characters kept consistent across a book.

Why do some of my older covers look different?

Covers and pictures made before the switch keep their original painted style. We do not repaint them. If an older Chapter Book is missing pictures, the new ones are painted to match its existing style.

Chapter Books

What is a Chapter Book?

A longer story split into 2 to 8 chapters (or parts), each recorded with a trained voice and played in order. Chapter Books have their own section in the menu and on the home page.

How do I create a Chapter Book?
  1. Open Chapter Books and tap Create a Chapter Book.
  2. Name it and choose Chapters or Parts.
  3. Add 2 to 8 sections, up to 4,000 characters each.
  4. Save, then record with one voice or a voice per chapter.
  5. Paint your book.
Can I upload a book file?

Yes. On the first screen, tap Upload a book file.

  • Formats: .txt, RTF, .docx or PDF
  • Up to 40,000 characters
  • Put headings like Chapter 1 or Part Two on their own line

We split the book at each heading for you to review. Any chapter over 4,000 characters needs a trim first.

What does Suggest titles do?

If a heading has no title, we write a short title for each untitled chapter when you save. Untick Suggest titles to skip it. You can change any title later in Book title and details.

How many credits does a Chapter Book use?

1 story credit per chapter, so a 4 chapter book uses 4. You see the cost before recording starts. If a chapter does not finish, its credit comes back. Painting the pictures is free.

How do I play or share a Chapter Book?

First, tap Paint my book on the book page. We paint a cover and a picture for each chapter. Play and Share appear once painting is done.

  • Play opens the full-screen player. Tap Chapters at the top to jump around.
  • Share emails a link that works for 30 days.
Can I change a chapter after recording?

Yes. Edit the text on the book page. We offer to record it again, which uses 1 story credit. Saving edits is free.

Can I add a chapter to another playlist?

No. Chapters stay with their book, and Chapter Books are not in Playlists. To use a chapter on its own, paste it as a normal script and record it.

Will a Chapter Book picture use our KinScript animals?

Yes. If an animal from our cast, like a raccoon, appears as a character in a chapter, the picture uses that character (Bandit). Phrases like "bear with me" or "duck under" do not count.

What happens if an animal can't be drawn?

KinSpeak tries again on its own. If it still can't, you will see a message asking you to try again. If it keeps happening, email [email protected].

Playlists and sharing

Can I share my stories and playlists?

Yes, share a playlist by email.

  1. Open the playlist and tap Share.
  2. Enter the email address twice.
  3. Tap Share Now.

They get a link to listen with no account needed. The link works for 30 days.

What if the person I share with has opted out of emails?

We do not send the email, but the share link is still created. Tap Copy link in the Share window and send it yourself. It works for 30 days.

Will I get a notification when a playlist is ready?

No. Playlists do not send a ready notification. When you share one, you get a "Playlist shared" notification.

It shows as its own pack, Notifications Bonus, in Your Voices & Stories. Once per account.

Home Screen app and notifications

How do I add KinSpeak to my Home Screen?

After your 4th story, a card on Home shows the steps for your phone or tablet. You can also open the menu and tap "Add to Home Screen +2." These only appear on a phone or tablet.

I opened KinSpeak from my iPhone Home Screen and it asked me to sign in again. Is that normal?

Yes. Sign in once with the same email, and everything will be there.

I dismissed the Home Screen card. Can I get it back?

Yes. It comes back after 7 days (up to 3 times), and "Add to Home Screen +2" stays in the menu until you claim the bonus.

How do I turn on notifications?

Open Settings and turn on Push notifications, then allow them when asked. Set up each device on its own.

How do I turn on notifications on iPhone or iPad?
  1. Add KinSpeak to your Home Screen (iOS 16.4 or later).
  2. Open it from the icon.
  3. Turn on Push notifications in Settings, or use the card on Home.
Notifications are blocked. What do I do?

Follow the steps the app shows for your device, then come back and tap Try again.

What happens when I tap a notification?

Most open Home, where you can find your new story in Stories. A trained voice ready notification opens Voices.

Account, privacy and security

How do I sign in?

With your email only. We send a 6-digit code; enter it and you are in. No code? Wait 60 seconds, tap Resend, and check spam.

Why doesn't sign-in tell me whether I already have an account?

To protect your privacy, sign-in works the same way for every email. If the email is new, we ask your name to finish setup. A code stops working after five wrong tries.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings, then Delete account, and confirm. This permanently deletes your voices, stories, scripts and playlists. Download anything you want to keep first.

Does KinSpeak sell my voice data?

No. Your voice is used only to make the audio you ask for, and we never sell it.

After training, we delete the original recordings or uploaded file and keep one short clip (about 12 seconds for recordings, up to 20 seconds for an upload). RunPod, which makes the audio, uses the clip for each job and deletes it when that job ends. We keep the trained voice until you delete it or your account. You can also email [email protected] anytime to ask us to delete a voice. See /privacy and /terms.

My app says “checking your account session” and will not load.

Tap Try again or Sign in. If it still will not load, close the app fully, reopen it while online, and sign in.
